There are two new Mickey Mouse shorts online! First up, Pluto makes his all-too-brief debut in Dog Show.
There’s not a lot to say about Dog Show. Mickey and Pluto are training for a dog show, but Pluto is in a terrible accident. Goofy tries to stand in as his replacement, but plans go awry when Goofy interprets the shows events in unusual ways.
There’s good artwork and some unexpected mature humor in this piece, but it left me wondering why the modern Goofy is so trashy. Rather than the good-natured, thoughtful but misguided sidekick of previous decades, new Goofy is a graceless imbecile who serves more as Mickey’s foil than his friend. If you haven’t seen Dog Show yet, you can watch it below. I’d love to hear others’ opinions on whether Goofy’s personality strikes others the way it does me.
The second new Mickey Mouse short is O Sole Minnie, a charming love story set in Italy and starring our two favorite mice.
Mickey is a Venetian gondolier infatuated with Minnie, a waitress in a restaurant adjacent to Mickey’s canal. Mickey’s attempts to woo her throughout the short are stopped short at every turn, but in the end, he discovers that Minnie is carrying a torch — and a picnic dinner — for him too.
O Sole Minnie is romantic and exceptionally sweet. It’s light on conventional cartoon visual gags, though Minnie does have a fun moment in which she pulls an entire spaghetti dinner — complete with table, white tablecloth, and a candle in a chianti bottle — out of her picnic basket. Disney Parks fans will also enjoy a very recognizable building facade.
O Sole Minnie and all the other new Mickey Mouse shorts are available to watch on the DisneyShorts YouTube page. The video is also embedded below.
